Its centrepiece is Khaplu Palace, a 19th-century royal residence restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture into an award-winning heritage hotel, surrounded by apricot orchards and framed by the granite walls of the Karakoram.
Beyond the palace, Khaplu's old town rewards slow exploration: the Chaqchan Mosque, founded around 1370, is one of the oldest mosques in the region, its timber-and-stone architecture showing the same Tibetan-influenced craft as Baltit Fort. Village lanes wind between traditional Balti houses, and the Shyok River braids across a vast grey floodplain below.
Continue up-valley and you reach Hushe, the fabled 'valley of the climbers', where the perfect pyramid of Masherbrum (K1, 7,821 m) closes the horizon. Autumn (September-October) is arguably the most beautiful window, with golden orchards against fresh snow on Masherbrum. Winter is cold and quiet, though Khaplu Palace remains a magical (and heated) retreat for the adventurous.
How to Reach
Khaplu is a 3-hour (103 km) drive east of Skardu along the Shyok River on a good paved road. Most travellers fly Islamabad-Skardu and continue by road the same day.
