Skardu at a Glance

Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and the gateway to the highest concentration of big mountains on the planet — K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrums all begin their approach here. But you do not need to be a mountaineer to love it: within an hour of town lie emerald lakes, a silver cold desert, ancient forts, and the road to the Deosai Plains.

The town sits at about 2,230 m along the Indus River, wide and dusty in the valley floor with dramatic rock walls on every side. It is the natural base for a 4-to-7-day Baltistan circuit taking in Kachura, Sarfaranga, Shigar, Khaplu, and Deosai.

Getting There: Flight vs Road

The Islamabad-Skardu flight takes about one hour and, on a clear day, passes Nanga Parbat close enough to feel like a scenic charter — many call it the most beautiful commercial route in the world. Skardu's upgraded airport now also handles selected international flights. The catch: mountain weather cancels flights regularly, so never book a same-day onward connection.

By road, the journey from Islamabad takes 16 to 18 hours: up the Karakoram Highway to Jaglot, then east on the Skardu Road along the Indus gorge — spectacular, but best split over two days with a night in Chilas or Gilgit. From Hunza, Skardu is a 7-to-8-hour drive, which is why combined Hunza-Skardu loops are the most efficient way to see both.

Where to Stay

Skardu offers everything from backpacker guesthouses to genuine heritage luxury. In town, comfortable mid-range hotels cluster around Yadgar Chowk and the airport road. For something special, Shigar Fort (a 400-year-old raja's palace, 45 minutes away) and Khaplu Palace (3 hours) are two of Asia's finest heritage hotels — we build both into our Baltistan itineraries whenever rooms allow.

The Essential Sights

Plan your days around these anchors:

• Shangrila Resort & Lower Kachura Lake — the famous 'Heaven on Earth' heart-shaped lake; go early before day-trippers.
• Upper Kachura Lake — deeper, quieter, and better for boating and trout; the short hillside walk between the two lakes is lovely.
• Sarfaranga Cold Desert — silver dunes against snow peaks across the Indus; sunset quad-biking and jeep rides.
• Kharpocho Fort — a 16th-century fort above town with the best sunset panorama over the Indus.
• Manthokha Waterfall — a 180-foot fall in Kharmang, 2 hours out, with riverside trout restaurants.
• Katpana Lake & Desert — closer to town, photogenic at golden hour.

The Big Day Trips: Deosai, Shigar & Khaplu

Deosai National Park is the trip most people come for: a 4,100-metre plateau of wildflowers and brown bears, 2 to 3 hours from town via Sadpara Lake, open roughly late June to early October. Do it as a long day trip to Sheosar Lake, or camp overnight at Bara Pani for dark skies and better wildlife chances.

Shigar Valley (45 minutes) pairs the restored Shigar Fort with the amber dunes at the valley mouth, and the road continues toward Askole — the last village before K2. Khaplu (3 hours east along the Shyok) rewards a full day or an overnight: Khaplu Palace, the 700-year-old Chaqchan Mosque, and views up the Hushe Valley to Masherbrum.

When to Go

April-May brings blossom to Shigar and Khaplu and thin crowds. June-August is peak season: lakes at their bluest, Deosai open and flowering, and every expedition passing through town. September-October is the connoisseur's window — golden poplars, crisp air, and the clearest mountain views. Winter is harsh but flights keep Skardu open for snow-lovers and photographers.

Practical Tips

• Keep one buffer day for the flight; if it cancels, the road plan kicks in.
• Withdraw cash in Skardu town — ATMs are unreliable beyond it.
• Pack a warm layer even in July: Deosai and lakeside evenings are cold.
• Dress modestly in villages and bazaars; Baltistan is culturally conservative.
• Book heritage hotels (Shigar, Khaplu) weeks ahead in season.
• Try Balti dishes: prapu (buckwheat pasta), mamtu (dumplings), and apricot desserts.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: fly in, Kharpocho Fort and Katpana at sunset. Day 2: Kachura Lakes and Shangrila, Sarfaranga sunset. Day 3: Deosai day trip to Sheosar Lake. Day 4: Shigar Fort and desert. Day 5: Khaplu and Chaqchan Mosque, return or overnight at the palace.
