Hunza Autumn Trip from Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi
How to reach Hunza for autumn colour from Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi: flights to Gilgit, the Karakoram Highway by road, timing and booking tips.
Updated October 22, 2026

The short answer: how to get to Hunza for autumn
From any Pakistani city, the usual route to Hunza is to reach Islamabad, then either fly Islamabad to Gilgit (about one hour) and drive 2–3 hours to Karimabad, fly Islamabad to Skardu and drive on to Hunza via Gilgit (about 7–9 hours), or take the Karakoram Highway by road (about 14–16 hours with an overnight stop). Lahore and Karachi travellers add a leg to Islamabad first.
In autumn the road is generally stable and flights are more reliable than in monsoon months, but flights into Gilgit and Skardu still cancel in cloud. Build in a road backup and a spare day.
From Islamabad: fly or drive?
Flying to Gilgit saves a full day and is the better choice if you have 5–6 days. The drive from Gilgit to Karimabad passes the Rakaposhi viewpoint at Ghulmat and is part of the trip, not wasted time.
Driving the KKH suits travellers with more time who want to see the highway, but it eats two days in total. Many groups fly one way and drive the other.
From Lahore: how do you connect to Hunza?
Most Lahore travellers either take the motorway to Islamabad (roughly 4–5 hours) and continue by flight or road, or fly Lahore to Islamabad and connect to Gilgit. Plan a night in Islamabad if you want to catch the morning Gilgit flight.
If you drive all the way, split the journey with an overnight stop rather than pushing through; mountain roads are slower and tiring after a long motorway day.
From Karachi: what is the practical plan?
Karachi travellers usually fly to Islamabad (about two hours), then continue to Gilgit by air or road. Keep your Islamabad connection generous — a tight same-day transfer risks missing the Gilgit flight if it is weather-affected.
Allow 6 days minimum on the ground in Hunza if you are flying in from far away; the travel days already take much of the trip.
Flying into Skardu instead of Gilgit
Flying to Skardu is a good choice for an autumn Hunza trip if you also want a day or two in Baltistan, or if the Skardu flight suits your dates. The road from Skardu to Karimabad runs via Gilgit and takes roughly 7–9 hours, so it is a full travel day — pick a morning arrival and start straight from the airport.
If you want colour in Skardu too, Shigar, Katpana and the Kachura lakes still work in autumn, but they need extra days; Deosai is likely closed by mid-October.
When should you travel in autumn?
Mid to late October is the safest window for central Hunza colour, with Passu and upper Hunza peaking a little earlier. Early October gives better Khunjerab odds; late October has deeper gold but colder nights and a higher chance of pass closures.
Weekends in clear October weeks fill the best view rooms. Book weekday dates if you can, and keep dates flexible by a few days.
What to carry for Hunza in October
Days are cool and bright; nights are near freezing, colder at Duiker, Gulmit and Passu. Carry a down layer, gloves, a hat, sun protection and your CNIC or passport — it is needed at Sost if Khunjerab is open.
Is a tour easier than self-planning?
Self-planning works if you are comfortable arranging flights, a driver and hotels in peak week. A tour removes the hardest parts: pre-booked Karimabad rooms, a private 4x4 with a mountain driver, a licensed guide and pre-paid entry fees.
Our 6-day Hunza Autumn Gold Tour starts with a pickup at Skardu airport and handles hotels, entry fees and a flight-delay road backup. Day 1 is a long road day to Karimabad, so book a morning arrival flight. It starts from $399 per person; the final price depends on group size and add-ons and is confirmed after your inquiry.
